About Jim

Jim helps bring confidence and clarity to clients by clearly and simply communicating the sound investment process the team follows in managing their money. This includes assisting them in understanding the longer-term perspective and the importance of matching their specific risk tolerance and overall financial situation to their personalized investment plan.

Clear, understandable communication, a sound investment process, and a specific investment plan are the values that drive his care for clients.

A native of Vinton, Iowa, Jim received his Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in accounting from Luther College in 1974, and an MBA from the University of Iowa. Jim worked three years with a public accounting firm, now known as RSM, prior to serving 12 years as the Chief Financial Officer of a savings bank in Cedar Rapids.

Jim then entered the retirement plan and investment business in 1990 as president of Benefit Plan Administration, which later merged with SCI Tower Pension Specialists, where he continued to serve as president and CEO.

Following that firm’s acquisition by Wells Fargo in 2000, Jim became vice president with Wells Fargo, marketing retirement plans and investment products in eastern Iowa.

Before joining Carson, Jim joined Northwestern Mutual in 2004 as a wealth management advisor. He has his Series 7, 63, and 66 securities registrations, as well as his CFP® certification.

When he’s away from the office, Jim’s a bit of a sports junkie – if there is a ball involved, he’s likely following it, especially basketball since he played in high school and college. He also stays active with morning walks with his wife, golfing, and biking.

Jim and his wife, Patty, have been happily married for more than 45 years and have four daughters. Over the past 15 years or so, 3 sons-in-law and a dozen grandkids have been added to this special crew, all of whom are the joys of his life.

He is passionate about living his life to please his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and using the skills and abilities God has given him to serve others. He is active in his church, Cedar Valley Bible Church, where he often teaches Sunday school classes and serves as an elder. He also serves on the boards of the Eastern Iowa Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Keys to Living Counseling Services.
